[Un]pOpuLaR

As I read through the Bible a few years ago I wrote down verses that struck me as being unpopular. The difficult ones that no one likes to preach or think about, and that no one really knows what to do with. I've been wanting to put them all in one place for the sake of organization, so I figured this would be a good place to do that. I found these verses to be helpful examples of how God is so much more than the warm, fuzzy Santa Claus that American Christianity makes Him out to be. But, I fully acknowledge that context is key with each of these, so I have included the references so you can do your own study and come to your own conclusions.
This list is not for the purpose of discouraging anyone's view of God as a loving Father and Savior, but rather to show how much more complex and mysterious His character is. Since these verses come straight from the Bible, the word of God, I believe it's important to study them rather than to shy away from them.
So here goes.

1 Samuel 2:6-8     The LORD kills and brings to life;
        he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
    The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
        he brings low and he exalts.
    He raises up the poor from the dust;
        he lifts the needy from the ash heap
    to make them sit with princes
        and inherit a seat of honor.
    For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's,
        and on them he has set the world.

1 Samuel 2:25     If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the LORD to put them to death.

1 Samuel 19:9     Then a harmful spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre. And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

2 Samuel 17:14     And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the LORD might bring harm upon Absalom.

1 Kings 12:20-24         ‘Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the LORD and went home again, according to the word of the LORD.

1 Kings 22:20     And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; and the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ And the LORD said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’ Now therefore behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the LORD has declared disaster for you.” (also 2 Chronicles 18:19-22)

2 Chronicles 10:15    King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the LORD might fulfill his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

2 Chronicles 22:7     But it was ordained by God that the downfall of Ahaziah should come about through his going to visit Joram. For when he came there, he went out with Jehoram to meet Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab.

2 Chronicles 25:20     But Amaziah would not listen, for it was of God, in order that he might give them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought the gods of Edom.

2 Chronicles 32:31    And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.

Psalm 5:5     The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
        you hate all evildoers.

Psalm 44:2    you with your own hand drove out the nations,
        but them you planted;
    you afflicted the peoples,
        but them you set free;

Psalm 71:20    You who have made me see many troubles and calamities
        will revive me again;
    from the depths of the earth
        you will bring me up again.

Jeremiah 51:12    “Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon;
        make the watch strong;
    set up watchmen;
        prepare the ambushes;
    for the LORD has both planned and done
        what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

Jeremiah 51:20-23     “You are my hammer and weapon of war:
    with you I break nations in pieces;
        with you I destroy kingdoms;
    with you I break in pieces the horse and his rider;
        with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer;
    with you I break in pieces man and woman;
        with you I break in pieces the old man and the youth;
    with you I break in pieces the young man and the young woman;
        with you I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock;
    with you I break in pieces the farmer and his team;
        with you I break in pieces governors and commanders.

Lamentations 3:37-38    Who has spoken and it came to pass,
        unless the Lord has commanded it?

Ezekiel 14:9     And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the LORD, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

Ezekiel 20:47-48    Say to the forest of the Negeb, Hear the word of the LORD: Thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from south to north shall be scorched by it. All flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.”

Ezekiel 36:22     “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.

Amos 4:7     “I also withheld the rain from you
        when there were yet three months to the harvest;
    I would send rain on one city,
        and send no rain on another city;
    one field would have rain,
        and the field on which it did not rain would wither;
    so two or three cities would wander to another city
        to drink water, and would not be satisfied;
    yet you did not return to me,”
    declares the LORD.

Amos 9:4     And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
        there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
    and I will fix my eyes upon them
        for evil and not for good.

Micah 1:12     For the inhabitants of Maroth
        wait anxiously for good,
    because disaster has come down from the LORD
        to the gate of Jerusalem.

Zechariah 8:10    For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.

Luke 11:49-51     Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

Luke 24:26     And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

John 3:27     And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.

John 12:37-42     Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
    “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
        and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
    Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
    “He has blinded their eyes
        and hardened their heart,
    lest they see with their eyes,
        and understand with their heart, and turn,
        and I would heal them.”

Romans 9

2 Thessalonians 2:11     And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

1 Peter 2:8     For it stands in Scripture:
    “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
        a cornerstone chosen and precious,
    and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
    So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
    “The stone that the builders rejected
        has become the cornerstone,”
    and
    “A stone of stumbling,
        and a rock of offense.”
    They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

Jude 1:5     Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

Revelation 2:10     Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Revelation 6:4     And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

Revelation 13:7     And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation

Revelation 13:14-15     ...and by the signs that it [the dragon] is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.

Revelation 16:9     The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire. They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.

Revelation 17:17     And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire, for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
